Recently, the UK Supreme Court issued a ruling that narrows the legal definition of \u201cwoman\u201d under the Equality Act. For many, this might seem far away. But it\u2019s a warning\u2014especially for us in Cyprus. Not only because we\u2019ve inherited parts of the British legal system, but because we\u2019ve been building our approach to LGBTQIA+ rights on shaky ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For over a decade, queer rights work in Cyprus has focused mostly on changing laws. This approach copies what most Western movements have done: pass a law, then celebrate. But the truth is, laws on paper don\u2019t guarantee safety or justice in real life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We already know this. There are anti-discrimination laws that get ignored. Gender recognition legislation that gets delayed and watered down. Hate crime laws that exist, but are barely used. And now, we\u2019re watching the UK\u2014the very system ours often reflects\u2014move to limit who even counts as a \u201cwoman\u201d under the law. If it can happen there, it can happen here too. And we\u2019re not ready.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This didn\u2019t happen overnight. In Cyprus, we\u2019re already hearing the same anti-trans rhetoric\u2014and more broadly, anti-LGBTQIA+ and anti-feminist narratives\u2014echoed in the media and public discourse. The seeds are being planted. And our response so far? Statements. Meetings. Hoping that the law will protect us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But hoping isn\u2019t enough. Lobbying politicians isn\u2019t a movement. And it doesn\u2019t prepare us for the backlash that\u2019s already at our door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And let\u2019s be clear: this is not just a threat to trans people. When the state starts deciding who \u201ccounts\u201d as a woman, it opens the door to more discrimination, more suppression, and fewer rights\u2014for everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What happens when someone doesn\u2019t look \u201cwoman enough\u201d? What happens when gender becomes a test to pass, rather than a lived reality to respect? These decisions don\u2019t just affect trans people\u2014they set a precedent that threatens the rights of all women, especially those outside the narrow mold of what society calls \u201cnormal.\u201d This fight is about all of us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So we have to ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What happens when the same institutions we\u2019ve worked with start turning against us?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n What do we do when the law changes\u2014or is not enforced?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n We need a shift. One that focuses on the community, not just political access. One that builds skills and networks, not dependence on a few people in power. Because rights aren\u2019t gifts handed down from above. They\u2019re something we fight for\u2014and defend\u2014together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We don\u2019t have to start from zero. Let\u2019s ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Who\u2019s already organizing in our communities?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n How can we build something stronger, together?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Those of us who\u2019ve never had the luxury of trusting or relying on the system\u2014have always known the truth: safety, care, and freedom come from each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Laws can help, but they\u2019re not the end goal. They\u2019re just one tool. It\u2019s time to sharpen the others.
