Gonorrhoea is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae. It can infect a person\u2019s penis, vagina, rectum (bum), throat or eyes.<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Gonorrhoea spreads through direct contact with infected bodily fluids, including:<\/p>

  • Condomless vaginal, anal, or oral sex.<\/li>
  • Sharing uncleaned sex toys or not changing condoms between use.<\/li>
  • During childbirth, potentially causing complications in babies.<\/li><\/ul>

    The bacteria cannot survive outside the human body, so casual contact like kissing, hugging, or using public toilets does not transmit the infection.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/details>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t

    General Onset:
    <\/strong>Symptoms usually appear within 2 weeks of infection, but many people may have no symptoms at all. , This means people can have the infection and not know it, and therefore they don\u2019t get tested.     Genital Symptoms:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    • Discharge:<\/strong>\u00a0May be thin, watery, and green, yellow, or white and can leak from the penis, vagina, rectum or eyes.<\/li>\n
    • Painful Urination:<\/strong>\u00a0A burning sensation when urinating.<\/li>\n
    • Lower Abdominal or Testicular Pain:<\/strong>\u00a0Lower abdominal pain or pain in the testicles (balls) or pain during sex.<\/li>\n
    • Irregular Bleeding:<\/strong>\u00a0Includes spotting between periods, heavier periods, or bleeding after sex (in menstruating individuals).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Rectal, Throat, and Eye Infections:<\/strong><\/p>\n

      • Rectum:<\/strong>\u00a0Discomfort, pain, or discharge from your anus.<\/li>\n
      • Throat:<\/strong>\u00a0Often asymptomatic but may cause a sore throat.\u00a0<\/li>\n
      • Eyes:<\/strong>\u00a0Redness, swelling, pain, or discharge (if infected fluid contacts the eyes).           • Symptoms improve within a few days, though pain or irregular bleeding may take up to 2 weeks to get better.<\/li>\n
          • A follow-up test may beis recommended within 2 weeks to confirm the infection has cleared.<\/li>\n
          • Avoid sexual activity until all partners are tested and treated and given the all-clear.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            Complications if Untreated:<\/strong><\/p>\n

            • Reproductive Health Risks:<\/strong>\u00a0Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) due to infection of the womb and surrounding areas, leading to chronic pain, infertility, or ectopic pregnancy; testicular infections causing pain and swelling. These are potentially severe and need immediate treatment.<\/li>\n
            • General Risks:<\/strong>\u00a0Having gonorrhoea or any other STI increases your risk of catching other STIs, such as HIV.
