Build the Pride You Want
Three out of four editions of United by Pride (UbP) ran at a deficit. We built it anyway.
UbP has no corporate sponsors or partners. It is self-funded. What we have is a community that shows up and refuses to let it fall. Every shortfall across three editions was covered by fundraising events and the organisers.
Every single artist who has ever performed on the UbP stage did so for free. They chose to give their time and talent to something they believe in. This is what solidarity looks like when it is not a slogan.
Don’t get us wrong. Artists’ work should be fairly compensated, and it is something we are building towards as UbP grows. But right now, this is what building something from nothing looks like, and you can be a part of it.
What UbP is
United by Pride is guided by basic founding principles. From funding, to who takes the stage, to where it happens.
Every bit of UbP is funded entirely by the community. This means every decision belongs to the community too. The programme, the politics, the direction. All of it. Yours.
The UbP stage belongs to all of us. The queer artists, performers and creatives of Cyprus. Our community built this. Our community leads it. Our community performs on it.
UbP takes place in the UN buffer zone that has divided this island for over 50 years. Two marches from north and south, united in the same space. This is a political statement. Peace, reunification, and queer liberation are the same demand.
UbP is intersectional. We march in solidarity with Palestine and all people facing occupation, displacement and genocide. We march against racism, sexism, colonialism and all forms of discrimination. Trans rights are a founding principle. Trans visibility and trans voices are central to our programme and our politics.
Community-funded. Intercommunal. Community-led. Intersectional. Radically Inclusive. Grassroots.
This is your invitation
We are forming an open organising committee. Every decision is made by consensus. The budget is public. The programme is shaped by the people in the room. Built by the community. Led by the community.
The work happens in four groups:
- Logistics, venue and programme
- Communications and outreach
- Operations and volunteers
- Bar and fundraising
Get in touch and shape it.
